Frankincense/Olibanum essential oil
Frankincense/Olibanum (Boswellia frereana) is a type of tree native to the mountainous regions of northern Somalia. Frankincense is obtained from a number of members of the Boswellia family; this particular species is known as Maydi or Dhidin in Somalia, and as Coptic frankincense in the West. The word "frankincense" comes from the Old French franc encens ("high-quality incense").
In Christianity, gold, frankincense, and myrrh were the gifts given to the infant Jesus by the three wise men. Frankincense is tapped from Boswellia trees by slashing the bark and allowing the resin to bleed out and harden into 'tears.' The tears are the blood of the frankincense tree, and were referred to as crystallized drops of sunlight.
The oil is a mobile pale yellow or pale amber-greenish liquid with a resinous, earthy aroma that has a slightly fruity/sweet, warm, spicy attitude to it. It is sometimes described as almost green lemon-like or reminiscent of green, unripe apples.
It is traditionally used in aromatherapy because it is spiritually grounding, clarifying, calming and relaxing without being sedating.
It blends well with bergamot, black pepper, camphor, cinnamon, cypress, geranium, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, mandarin, neroli, orange, palmarosa, patchouli, pine, rose, sandalwood, vetiver, and ylang-ylang.
Characteristics: green, earthy, citrusy
Subsidiary notes and nuances: sweet-woody, balsamic, peppery
