VENERATION OF THE DEAD | Limited-Edition Autumn Seasonal Box
Sorry, currently out of stock
❝ Death closes the gates of time, and opens those of eternity. ❞
Since time immemorial, olfaction has been interwoven into the lustrous fabric of life, as well as death. From the cradle to the tomb, we are continuously developing a complex palette of aromas which inform our vital landscape. These scents can flesh out our fondest memories, or perfume our most disagreeable experiences, and the smell of loss is no exception. The putrid malodour of decay; the static, sterile stink of a waiting room; the bottle of lotion which, in just one whiff, punctuates each memory with a loved one come to pass. These scented relics, whether material or intangible, can provide an intimate dialog between the living and the dead, in a society which now more often than not mutes the dead.

THIS SEASONAL OFFERING CONTAINS:
L'Ossuaire. EAU DE PARFUM
pontifical incense • cranial moss • chrysanthemum • rose • dust
L’Ossuaire eau de parfum aims to encapsulate the deafening silence held in conversation between the living and the dead, interpreting uncertainty, wonderment, stillness, and embrace into a concentrated spirit water. Constructed around orris root, funerary blooms, oakmoss, and incense, the resulting fragrance is delicate, resinous, and mossy, with the powdered, velvet feel of the dust of time gently stirred by those who wander the halls of the dead in contemplative silence.
Ingredients: Ethanol (cane sugar alcohol, organic), Natural fragrance/parfum (essential oils, absolutes, natural isolates, and other natural botanical extractions)
15 ml in a black glass vessel with a spray cap.
Rites of passage. ANOINTING OIL
blue lotus • frankincense • galbanum • cedar • pine resin • myrrh
Rites of Passage is a multipurpose all-over anointing oil informed by ancient embalming techniques; a blend of argan, moringa, and sesame oils, infused with healing resins, balsams, and sacred Blue Lotus. Use it in your most critical routines and rituals of self-care and preservation, when transcendental wisdom and physical or spiritual healing are needed most. Lightly scented and balsamic, suited for sensitive skin.
Ingredients: Argania spinosa (argan) kernel oil, Sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil, and Moringa oleifera seed oil infused with Boswellia sacra (frankincense), Commiphora myrrha (myrrh), Pinus strobus (white pine), Pinus sibirica (Siberian pine), Juniperus virginiana (Virginia cedar) and Ferula gummosa (galbanum) resins, Nymphaea caerulea (blue lotus) flower, Nymphaea caerulea (blue lotus) flower extract, Nelumbo nucifera (white lotus) flower extract
20 ml in a black glass vessel with a pump dispenser. Apply in slow, circular motions, allowing for these rich, resin-infused oils to penetrate the skin, or use to anoint tools in ritual. Store in a cool, dry area after use.
Funeral Pyre. SEND-OFF LUMINARY
galbanum • oakwood • patchouli • woodsmoke • blood cedarwood • juniper • benzoin
Funeral Pyre is a farewell votive borne of the practice of open-air cremation, with the idea that its guiding light may lead the departed safely Home and offer comfort to the bereaved. Gather or sit in quiet contemplation over its mesmerizing flicker and comforting aroma of smouldering cask wood to reignite hope after loss, or as a token for the ancestors and beloveds who’ve crossed the veil.
Ingredients: soy wax, natural fragrance/parfum (essential oils, absolutes, and other natural botanical extractions), wooden wick, cotton wick, and a sprinkle of the perfumer's homegrown botanicals ( calendula, monarda, tansy, sweet clover, yarrow, daisy, and/or mugwort)
100 g in a black glass vessel with a lid and wood-encased cotton wick. Do not leave burning candle unattended, and keep out of reach of children, pets, and flammable materials. Remove dried botanical before burning. For optimal burn, trim wick 1/4" after each use.
Ashes to Ashes. DEVOTIONAL INCENSE
benzoin • musk root • myrrh • frankincense • sandalwood • patchouli • mugwort • rosemary • rue
Ashes to Ashes is a loose incense composed of funerary resins, sacred wood, and mortuary herbs, scented with the sweet scent of earthly decay. Burn this fragrant offering to carry messages to the heavens, for communion with the departed, and for protection when walking the line between worlds, or scatter symbolically in lieu of remains.
Ingredients: Styrax benzoin (benzoin), Santalum spicatum (sandalwood), Commiphora myrrha (myrrh), Boswellia sacra (frankincense), Ferula moschata (musk root), Salvia rosmarinus (rosemary), Artemisia vulgaris L. (mugwort), Ruta graveolens (rue), Charcoal powder
25g loose incense presented in a black glass apothecary vessel with lid.
To burn incense powder, light a self-igniting charcoal disk and place in a heat-resistant container, allowing for embers to catch before sprinkling powdered incense into the divot. Do not burn incense unattended, and keep out of reach of children, pets, or flammable materials. Use caution when handling vessel, which may become hot to the touch.
For more considerations and priceless insight on the intersections of death and olfaction, we highly recommend Nuri McBride’s body of work, Death/Scent, which, in our esteem, is requisite reading on the subject.
