Damiana, or Turnera diffusa, has been used by Indigenous Mexican populations since ancient times as a mild aphrodisiac and euphoric stimulant when sexual dysfunction is attached to strong emotions such as anxiety, stress, and mild depression. It is a small shrub that grows in the tropical parts of North America, particularly Mexico and Texas, and bears sweet-smelling, serrated pale green leaves and small yellow flowers which bloom in summer and are followed by fruits with a fig-like taste.
It is primarily known as an aphrodisiac and urinary tract tonic, but it is also valued as a relaxant, digestive stimulant, and mood enhancer with subtle euphoric effects. It acts directly on the reproductive organs to fight infertility, build red blood cells, and balance hormones. Damiana helps to soothe and strengthen the brain and nervous system, which calms the nerves, eases tension headaches, fights exhaustion, and improves energy. In Western sex magic, it is known as "the psychic aphrodisiac." The leaves can also be used in smoking blends or to make cordials. The scent is sweet, fruity, and bright, with earthy undertones similar to chamomile.
