SANDALWOOD, NEW CALDONIA | Essential Oil
Pure Santalum austrocaledonicum essential oil.
Sandalwood essential oil comes from the wood of slow-growing hemiparasitic trees of the genus Santalum. Overharvesting and illegal logging have led to concerns about the long-term viability of the well-known Santalum album, commonly known as Indian Sandalwood. We are happy to offer Santalum austrocaledonicum from New Caledonia as a sustainable alternative to this precious oil.
Our Santalum austrocaledonicum essential oil is sourced from the islands of southwestern New Caledonia and is managed by eight tribes that inhabit the region. They work in collaboration with tribal authorities with support from the government forestry administration to ensure the sustainable harvesting of sandalwood. To maintain a balanced ecosystem, three trees are replanted for each tree harvested.
New Caledonia sandalwood is rich in a-santanol, the organic compound that gives it its iconic deep woody aroma, and much of the skin benefits that have made it a staple in skincare for centuries. Sandalwood is an excellent fixative in natural perfumery and has a tenacious sweet-woody drydown.
